I’ve had my 5 year old desktop secured with antivirus, spyware, firewall, adware, etc. I just purchased my first laptop & since I’m now wireless, my paranoia has come up. Aside from the usual antivirus/spyware/firewall protection, do I need to get something with “wifi security”, “bi-directional firewall”, and bluetooth protection(‘bluesnarfing’ and ‘bluejacking’ can allow attackers using easily available software to hack into data held on the laptops, or use the machine as a conduit for other activities)? With all these different security programs I’m starting to wonder if they’re really necessary. I’m running vista ultimate & IE7 (which have protection & encryption), Norton Internet Security, keep my file sharing “off”, & I’ll be installing Windows defender and Yahoo’s antispyware. Is this enough to keep my laptop data safe in a public wifi area or do I also have to get more security like the one’s I mentioned above? My apologies for the long post & gratitude to those who took the time.

Hi, I got my dads used laptop about 3 weeks ago. It has norton in the list of programs, but it is disabled and i cannot run it, as it was his and i don’t know the passwords etc. So i didn’t have any protection but man, it was so fast. I LOVED how fast it was. About a week ago i downloaded CA virus protection. This screwed up my computer. it was so slow (about 1-2 minutes to open a browser)…so after having enough of that i uninstalled it. well, now my computer is slower than ever! I was trying to type this quesion on my laptop and it keeps freezing up. I ran a internet security check thru symantec and it was fine. then when i try to run a virus check thru symantec it freezes at file 2806. So i can’t even do anything on my lap top now. I am on my desktop and it is so slow too. I hate it. Ok, so, how can i make my laptop fast again, what do i need to do? and then what type of free virus protection? Also, what is internet security? do i need that? thanks!
It won’t let me remove norton. it tells me that the supervisor is not connected. whatever that means. i have tried several times to uninstall it. then i can’t install a new one AGV, because it says i have to remove norton first. ugh

Since putting McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 on my laptop, my laptop is running much slower – taking 5 minutes to get to the desktop when switching the laptop on. How can I resolve this?

Someone gave me their old corporate laptop from their work because they were given a new one… However, there is a sticker on the front that says the machine is for company use only, and is subject to being monitored at any time.

Would formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows make be enough for me to enjoy this without being monitored?
Would I need to replace the whole hard drive?
Are there other ways (i.e. tracking) they could locate or identify the machine?
Is there a way for the serial number to send itself back to them?

Bottom line, what do i need to do to enjoy my new laptop without his company knowing what im doing or where i am?

We have a new laptop (HP), i have lots of i-tunes on it, the kids use it etc. We have just managed to go wireless (Via Belkin) and have installed the McAfee security thing, since doing so the computer is sooooo slow, it took 45 minutes to start. I have since disabled half of the McAfee things and it is slightly faster (we have firewall and one other at the mo). Any ideas on how to have security and fast network. Also how do we make the computer secure, at the mo the network is unsecure, seeing as we do a lot of internt work we desperatly need to have a secure line. – Step by step insturctions if you can help please, i can plough through word etc. but setting and networks confuse the hell out of me. Many thanks in advance.
