I installed Kaspersky Internet Security on a laptop and home computer. Now my laptop can’t find the wireless device to connect to. I went to control panel, internet connections, and clicked repair on the wireless connection. The repair finished and it still tells me it there’s a hardware malfunction. I went into device manager and nothing was wrong there. I’ve looked at all the physical pieces of our home network and nothing looks wrong. Also, I’ve never had a problem with our laptop while at home until Kaspersky security was installed. Ask any questions from me and I’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for any help you give.

Anyone out there running it? As a computer tech I keep thinking MS will someday “iron out” all the virus problems with Windows. I heard about the “One Care” or “No One Cares”. That doesn’t sound like a deal for the end user. So, what about viruses? Does it look like Vista will be the same as XP? What about this performance thing I keep hearing about. We’ve got a nation of people too cheap to buy XP capable PC’s. Are we now expected to buy even more powerful PC’s to run Vista?

I use Microsoft XP. I am aware that hardware and software exists (sometimes sold together, sometimes separately) with which I can back up my entire computer — OS, registries, bookmarks, docs, etc. This interests me because I’d rather not have to restore it program by program from original disks– first the operating system, then all the applications I run. I have dozens of applications that I use regularly, and it would take days to restore everything and troubleshoot until I have them all working together.

I am very careful with security and have firewalls, spybot stoppers, anti-virus, etc. Still, you never know when it will crash and you have to restore from scratch. I probably need > 100 GB.

Please tell me what you use and what you like about it. I don’t care if it’s a little slow; I want something that is fairly seamless and straightforward. I am willing to work awhile with the setup, but after that’s established I want the backup and restore to be easy.

Thanks!

 adware
Alex asked:

1st. I don’t know how it happened but a while back my p.c. was infected with adware pop-ups. I have tried to get rid of it and nothing has worked. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

2nd. This computer is an old computer, I have a new cd-rom and cd-rw in it. I was wondering, can I add a new motherboard into the old pc tower, or would I have to buy a new tower?

3rd. Lastly, if I am able to update the old tower with a new motherboard, would updating the motherboard, hard-drive, and memory take away the adware?

Thank you in advance.

I work for a small non-profit agency, which we have around 30gig of data that is currently backed up on tape nightly and stored off-site. Problem is we don’t have a good restore procedure in place – mostly for the fact that we have no extra machines which can read the tapes other then the servers which made them (and could be useless in a restore situation.)

So I started to look at backing up data on small USB flash drives. All data will still be backed up on tape since out of the 30 gig, 20 of it is archived data that we would not need access to from USB drive in an emergency.

Anyway, with a USB drive – we could simply hook it up to a laptop and get our important data from that.

#1 concern – Security. I’ve seen some flash drives that have hardware encryption in them – what is the advantages/disadvantages vs. Software encryption from lets say Norton Save & Restore program.

#2: Can anyone think of any other reasons we would not want to do this? Any other ideas or thoughts? Thank
Well I will need to use the encryption (which is why I’m asking about it)

This will be used as backup to our system – and if the backups were stolen or something similar, I do not want to be responsible for calling 15,000+ people to let them know their personal information may have been compromised because of unsecured data being out in the public.

So for anyone who does work with encryption, can you tell me what the difference is between hardware encryption (like you can get with these Kingston Flash Drives: http://www.kingston.com/flash/dt_secure.asp ) and software encryption (like you can get using Nortons Save & Restore program: http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/features.jsp?pcid=br&pvid=nsr20 )

Since installing F-Secure internet security 2007, my Windows 2000 systems’ responsiveness to clicking buttons etc seems to be much higher, especially a few minutes after resuming from hibernation.

The total ram usage on the machine has increased to 313/512MB.
The hard drive is quite slow, ATA-66, Maxtor DiamondMax 32049h2.

Using the system monitor, I am not noticing any spikes in % CPU Time, RAM Pages/Sec, Page faults/Sec, % Disk time while this laggyness is occuring.

I wonder if its something to do with hardware interupts becuase I know these can cause spurious problems, and it is possible that the onboard networking was being used to update F-Secure when it was laggy . The computer is a Compaq Evo D500 sff with NVidia Vanta LT AGP graphics (latest drivers).

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated!
{THIS IS A *WORK* MACHINE.
2GHZ P4 512MB RAM. HDD’S SLOW.
Why upgrade, it works fine with W2K. I hate the notion of Vista.}

*IT’S THE CLIPBOARD, WHENEVER I COPY ANYTHING (text when I realised), IT SLOWS TO A CRAWL.*

I’ve gotta work on eliminating some variables, any *REASONABLE* suggestions appreciated.
