i recently downloaded spybot search & destroy because it was recommended. but every time i try to scan my computer with it, my computer shuts off mid scan.whats going on? anything i can do to fix the problem or can you recommended a spyware equal or better than spybot?

Last night this annoying adware called Internet Speed Monitor installed itself on my computer. It pops up on the lefthand side when I search something. I read that I’m supposed to go into control panel, add/remove programs, then just uninstall it from there. So I’m doing that now but its taking FOREVER! Is it supposed to? Its in progress uninstalling but its been at only 3 little bars for like 15 minutes now. I ran like 5 scans with Ad Aware and Spybot Search&Destroy, I got rid of some other crap but not ISM. Jeeez, adware is teh suck.
Thanks for the help, I’m going to try uninstalling in safe mode first, if that doesnt work then I guess I’ll try out the links.

At first, it took over my homepage… then I downloaded some software to get rid of it, which this was mainly a firewall that kept it from getting to my IE.
NOW I have a little yellow shield that will pop up saying that I have viruses and I also have the pop ups that direct me to websites like pestcapture and ad heal. Anyone heard of this and how do I get rid of it?
I have run system mechanic, AVG, Zone alarm anti virus… and they have found some malicious software and got rid of it, but obviously not all of it!!!
I wanted to add that the little yellow shield pops up in the taskbar by the clock.
